 Christmas Donation Campaign
 
For Christmas 2004, EKF launched a campaign to gather support to organize a charity event and to prepare packages of gifts for the children and young women of the SOS Children¡¯s Villages, Aeranwon, and Motungii Shwimpteo. EKF asked European companies for financial donations or donations in kind. Following the campaign, EKF was able to organize a Christmas party at the SOS Children's Village in Seoul and surprise Aeranwon with 10 new computers.

 1st Oktoberfest in Pyongyang
 
In October 2004, the first ever Oktoberfest in Pyongyang was celebrated by more than two hundred guests from the foreign community, residing in Pyongyang, as well as invited North Koreans. The event was co-organised by the German embassy in Pyongyang and EKF.

 BMW provides Orphans with a fun Summer Holiday
 
With the aim to provide the children of the SOS Children¡¯s Village with a fun-filled summer holiday, BMW invited 92 orphans to Caribbean Bay in Everland, Yongin. For the children, the day started with an exciting ride in BMWs to the water park, which, as some children later proclaimed, was the best part of the entire day.

 European Companies and a Theatre Donate their Products and Services to Charities in 2004
 

In 2004, several European companies and Chongdong Theatre showed their commitment to the welfare of Korean society by donating their companies¡¯ products and services to three South Korean charities, EKF supports. The donations were spearheaded by EKF, which supports South Korean charity organizations and is committed to deepening relationships between the EU and the Korean Peninsula.

 

Organisations that received the donations were:

-    The SOS Children¡¯s Villages in South Korea, which are three orphanages located in Daegu, Seoul, and Suncheon.

-    Aeranwon, which is a South Korean charity organization that cares for the physical and mental wellbeing of struggling, underage, single mothers and pregnant women by providing facilities and support hotlines.

 

Donating Companies were:

-         Nivea Seoul

-         Lego Korea

-         SRS Books

-         Chongdong Theatre

-         Macquarie Capital Korea

 

Nivea donates to SOS Children¡¯s Village and Aeranwon

 

NIVEA donated moisturizers and various skin care products to the children and mothers of the SOS Children¡¯s Villages, as well as to the young women of Aeranwon, in an effort to support South Korean charity organizations and to contribute to South Korean welfare.

 

The donation ceremony took place at NIVEA headquarters on July 30, 2004. NIVEA staffs, representatives of SOS Children¡¯s Village together with five children who will be benefiting from the donation, representative from Aeranwon, as well as EUCCK and EKF staff were present at the ceremony.

 

The products donated by NIVEA very much improved the daily life of the children and young women helped by the two organizations.

 

LEGO donates to the SOS Children¡¯s Villages  

 

At the end of August, LEGO KOREA donated toys to the children of the SOS Children¡¯s Village. All the children from the Villages in Daegu, Seoul, and Sucheon are very happy with their brand new LEGO toys and play with them as often as possible.

 

Social commitment is an integral part of LEGO. LEGO was the first toy manufacturer to join the Kofi Annan Initiative Global Compact in 2003. Adopting the principles of the Global Compact Initiative, LEGO reflects a desire to behave decently and to assume a share of the responsibility for helping to solve the major issues facing the world in areas such as human rights, labour standards, and environment.

 

LEGO contributes by doing what it does best: helping children learn and grow through play.

 

SRS Books donates to SOS Children¡¯s Village Library

 

SRS Books, a South Korean publishing house known for publishing fantastically illustrated children¡¯s books in English and Korean, donated some of their books, such as ¡°The Adventures of Bob and Al,¡± ¡°Rooftop¡± and ¡°Is that funny?,¡± to the SOS Children¡¯s Village library.

 

Chongdong Theater donation to South Korean charity organizations

 

In August Chongdong Theater invited 10 children from SOS Children¡¯sVillage and 5 women from Aeranwon to see their show. In the future if both organizations wish to visit the Theater again they can call Chongdong Theater directly and get free seats.

 EKF Scholarship Programme 2004
 
After the success of the first year of the EKF Scholarship Programme, EKF invited another round of students to apply for the EKF scholarship. Many students with excellent academic records applied to receive funding for their studies in Europe. In August 2004, two South Korean students received the EKF scholarship and went to the UK and Germany for their graduate studies. For the EKF Scholarship Programme, the year 2004 was very important, because for the first time, EKF was able to also send North Korean students to European universities.

 Training Seminars and Workshops for North Koreans
 
In 2004, EKF was able to start its training activities in and for North Koreans. In June, EKF sent North Korean patent examiners to Beijing to participate in the EPO-SIPO Joint Training Seminar for Junior Patent Examiners. Furthermore, EKF organised a Seminar on the International Monetary and Financial System and a Workshop on Custom Practices in Pyongyang.

 Children¡¯s Contest with Donga Daily
 
On May 3, 2004, EKF organized a picture contest with Donga Daily to celebrate Korean Children¡¯s Day and the expansion of the European Union. The contest was aimed at Korean children and its goal was for the Korean children to discover Europe by matching famous European monuments to the capitals where they are located in.
